It is very important to understand that before commencing any form of training or health process it is crucial to first conduct some health, lifestyle, nutritional, postural and movement assessments. These assessments ensure that I, or the professional you work with, prescribe the correct recommendations and routine to best meet your needs and provide accurate nutritional guidance to accelerate success.

You are unique! If assessments are not completed it’s like painting a picture of a person you’ve never met or know nothing about… maybe only age and gender. With this minute amount of information, do you think that the painting will resemble the person? The best anyone could do is generalize and hope for the best! It’s the same when prescribing exercise for someone with out first analyzing or assessing their current environment and physical condition.

Body Fat %:

probe2Ultrasound Scan – The most accurate and comfortable technology available for measuring complete body composition. The BodyMetrix Pro works by using ultrasound. When ultrasound waves penetrate tissue, reflections occur at different tissue boundaries. For example, there are strong ultrasound reflections at fat-muscle and muscle-bone.

Ultrasound allows the BodyMetrix to detect the true fat thickness at each measurement point. By making measurements at multiple points on the body an accurate body fat percentage can be determined. The device doesn't just measure fat, it is the only low-cost method that also measures muscle thickness as well as provides risk appraisals for stroke, diabetes and coronary heart disease.

Skinfold Calipers – Skinfold measurements are not the most accurate but are widely accepted as one of the better, affordable options for measuring body composition. The method involves taking Skinfold Caliper measurements in 3-9 different locations on the body, and then applying the results into one of the various formulas.

Fitness Tests:

Cardiovascular testing is not essential when devising a fitness regime. However, they are extremely useful and informative tools for monitoring progress, setting targets and assessing general condition of the cardiovascular system. KiwiFitness offer 3 levels of fitness tests to accommodate all ranges of fitness levels. The first predictive test we utilize is the Chester Step Test, which is a gentle test suitable for the sedentary, obese & elderly populations. The next level is the Multistage Fitness Test (or BEEP test) that is ideal for the moderate to highly active or individuals who participate in ‘court’ sports. Finally, the most intense fitness assessment is a multi-discipline military/services test that incorporates muscular strength endurance. All the cardiovascular tests KiwiFitness incorporate provide normative data, so you can rank your results against the general population.

Posture & Movement Assessment:


ladyIt's very important that before commencing any form of training you must first be assessed to ensure any exercise prescription best meets your specific needs by not compounded pre-existing postural issues, minimise injury risk and accelerate success. Initiating a training programme that fails to correct mechanical movement flaws and neuromuscular inefficiency will create further postural or functional problems = ineffective results and potential injury. KiwiFitness: Body Expert Systems conducts a wide range of postural and movement assessments to be able to fully understand the functionality and limitations of your body. The overhead squat, illustrated below, is one of those many movement screens.

Intrinsic Biomechanical & Muscle Balance Assessments:

arrowIntrinsic biomechanics focuses on how the internal function of joints and muscles affect an individual's ability to perform exercises or sports. Phil Kelly will screen the intrinsic function of your body to see how it performs or compensates when completing movements, exercises or activities. He identifies aspects that could impair performance or lead to injury, even if you currently aren't aware or feeling pain.

The biomechanical programme follows three interlinked phases: Normalise (eliminating any compensation or impairment issues), Stabilise (focusing on core function and strength) and Functionalise integrating the stability work with functional training.

To perform optimally and prevent injury your body needs to intrinsically function and perform to its best before you can achieve your maximum extrinsically.
